The world’s climate is changing with more acute weather systems than ever before as the planet heats up through global warming.
Here in Australia we’ve recently experienced drought, fire and floods, which has had a devastating effect on the environment.
However Australian company, Anchoring Rope & Rigging (AR&R), has also produced one of the world’s toughest industrial solutions - HULK Earth Anchors.
Now the world is coming to AR&R for help on critical projects in far flung destinations including Hawaii and the Persian Gulf:
Hawaii’s Department Of Transport Needed Help
AR&R’s CEO, Rob Stockl was approached by Contech Engineering to work on a project for the Department of Transport for the US State of Hawaii, on eroded slope repairs in Central Ohua.
“We manufactured and supplied thousands of TRK anchors (turk reinforcement anchor kits) for the repair of the eroded slopes,” he explains.
“The anchors were tested to 300kg and 600kg and secured to the VMax erosion control mat with HULK load plates, which incorporate the unique HULK wedge system, provided as part of the assembly. The installation was also a challenge and was completed with hand held jackhammers, from elevated work platforms,” he says. “Once installed the mat was vegetated with a variety of deep rooted grasses and over time closed to form a reinforced grass embankment.”
Visitors to Hawaii would never guess that such a typically lush Polynesian landscape had so much going on beneath the surface.
Australian Raw Materials & AR&R Craftsmanship Equals A Job Well Done
The story behind HULK Earth Anchors began in South Africa where Mr Stockl was born. He grew up with a technical pedigree in the field of Steel Wire Ropes, Rigging Services and Rigging Services. This is hardly surprising since his family’s Ropery business dates back to 1918.
On moving to Sydney, Australia, Rob Stockl founded AR&R 14 years ago. He then launched HULK Percussion Anchors a decade ago, after becoming frustrated by the lack of locally made percussion anchors and almost zero technical support in the field of percussion anchoring, which he felt was not doing the technology justice.
The Very Best Is Made With The Best
With his knowledge of percussion anchoring, Mr Stockl set about creating a fit for purpose anchor that was better on all levels than anything that had previously been created. Built with the very best raw materials that Australia has to offer, along with modern engineering, a supportive team and extraordinary suppliers, the HULK earth anchor was born to be Simpler, Sleeker, Tougher, Faster, Stronger & 100% Driven.
Most importantly HULK Earth Anchors are backed 100% locally by an Australian manufacturer and the company is not an importer or distributor. HULK is now a world leader in percussion earth anchoring and size for size, is 60% stronger than other drive anchors, allowing higher holding capacities in suitable ground conditions.
HULK Earth Anchors are built to the following Australian standards: AS1831, AS4680, AS1666, and AS2076. It’s the unique HULK Hard Armour coating, which gives the anchors, three times the corrosive resistance over competing products’ traditional hot dip galvanising methods.
HULK Hard Armour incorporates a case around the anchor, which is extremely hard, offering further protection from scratches and damage through the anchor installation process.
Attention To Detail Makes Hulk Earth Anchors Unbeatable
The chisel shaped nose of the anchor, offers superior strength and is the ideal proportion for anchor installations, while the hex body of the anchor, allows for a smaller profile when driving the anchor into the ground. This facilitates a smoother and more rapid installation process than other earth anchors.
The angled surfaces of the `Hulk’ allow for improved bearing capacity, while larger frustum cones enhance general holding performance. Other features include a widened scoop on the tail of the anchor, which rotates the anchor into a load bearing position more reliably and over shorter distances. This allows for reduced anchor driving depths and quicker installation and proof testing times.
From The Slopes Of Ohua - To Jindabyne
Through head contractor, RD Miller Pty Ltd, Colliers International and Snow Australia approached AR&R to provide an engineered anchoring solution and installation to anchor a sports surface with HULK Percussion Anchors at a ski ramp in Jindabyne. Mr Stockl explains that the anchors were necessary to prevent movement of the ski surface with its long and steep gradient. It was an ideal project for AR&R to take on.
“Multiple anchor sets were installed along the edges of the slope and used to secure a tensioning strip into the ground, which serves to keep the ski mat taut,” he explains.
The ramp with inruns, transitions and jumps was needed to provide the Australian Winter Olympic Ski Team with an all-year-round training facility.
So this successful project resulted in Anchoring Rope & Rigging helping to put Australia on the map in not one way but two, by providing a world class solution and also helping our athletes to a healthy medal count at the Winter Olympics.
Saving The Cherry Crops In Wandin Valley, Victoria.
The sweetness of the summer cherry season was no doubt enhanced by the work that AR&R did through Netpro Pty Limited for Wandin Valley Farms, in Victoria’s Boweya Region.
According to Rob Stockl, the brief involved providing “tested anchor points to resist the tensile loads generated by shade canopies protecting a crop of cherry trees”. He says that the work was completed in two phases over a two-month period.
“The site challenges included installing HULK percussion anchors into diverse soil conditions and achieving load in shallow soil beds,” he explains. This also meant working around productive cherry trees without damaging the fruit.
“The design load of up to 140kn that had to be achieved by the Hulk percussion anchors, was possible even in the varied conditions,” says Mr Stockl.
He is particularly proud of this project as it demonstrates that HULK anchors can be installed in any soil situation.
